Living where you are you have tons of options to find some quieter water as an alternative. Tough to relax in bigger waves and everything is just a little tougher to do. I'm just a weekend warrior looking for a nice relaxing day of fish catching with friends and family. After 3 years and the addiction kicked in my dad and I upgraded to a bigger boat.Being able to go out in rougher water is great and the fishing can be dynamite but it's not a whole lotta fun personally. I fished a 16' deep V when I first started fishing Ontario in the early 90's. even with a 19ft Deep V you are going to have to pick your days. But I have gone out on my buddy's 16ft SC for browns in close and its done OK, don't really want to be in anything over 2fters. I personally would wait for an 18-19ft deep V with a full windshield. My whole boating life has been on the small lakes and middle and tidal delaware river of PA so this big lake stuff is new to me. I definitely don't want a dedicated offshore troller so I was hoping this would work. What set up do you guys recommend? I've got someone who will sell me a 16 foot deep V side console with a 70hp Honda outboard for a really good price but I fear it's too small. I'm minutes from irodequoit bay and would likely fish it alot but would like to make occasional trolling runs on the big water. Ideally I'd like a boat that is easy enough to trailer and launch in the fingerlakes and in lake ontario. Just moved to The Rochester area from Philadelphia and my flat bottom johnboat doesn't cut it up here with the wind and chop. Painting on the stern and board begins tonight if the weather holds, and hope to get it in the water for a test run Saturday morning to align the motor.Is 16 foot deep v to wimpy for the big lake? Once I get the transon prepared, I won't have to take the board off unless a repair is needed. Had to go to two stores to get all the replacement parts, and niether of the "hardware associates" had heard of this issue. Lowe's was good to me though and gave a full refund. Granted, my enthusiasm for getting to this point in the resto. ![]() I am 6'2"/230 but didn't think I put that much on those bolts, but I needed the board snug to straighten out the bow in the stern caused by the old bad transom. When it cools and you try to back them off it's like trying to push two files across each other against the grooves. Because the stainless steel is softer, when the nut starts to tighten on the bolt, it creates "galls" on the nut and threads due to the heat generated by friction. So, today I go back to Lowe's for more hardware. Said that was mom's job and he'd go get her. I offered my 6 year old son 5 bucks to kick me as hard as he could in the rump, but he wouldn't do it. ![]() Of the 14 bolts I tightened down, 12 are junk! I sheared of 8 and the other 4 nuts wouldn't thread back on the bolts. LET THIS BE A WARNING!!! NEVER tighten down stainless without using the anti-sieze on the threads of the bolt first. After stewing over his explanation all day I went home and tried to take the board back off. A co-worker with a ton of automotive experience asked if I used anti-sieze on the threads before I torqed it all down and when I replied "NO, WHY", he laughed. Spent $120 on stainless hardware to fasten the transom board and side braces, fit it all together, drilled the new holes and tightened it down to check the fit. Got to work yesterday morning with chest bowed out over how much I had done on the boat this weekend.
